Will Take The Conviction Rate To 75% By 2022: CBI To SC

Will take the conviction rate to 75% by 2022: CBI to SC. After the Supreme Court’s remarks that the CBI’s success rate is low, CBI said, will try to increase it to 75 percent.

the investigating agency has filed an affidavit in the apex court informing that its conviction rate is 65 to 70 percent and that it will extend it till August 2022.

In the affidavit, CBI Director SK Jaiswal said that in the year 2020, the conviction rate was 69.83 percent and in 2019 it was 69.19 percent.

Jaiswal said that in October 2021, soon after taking over as the CBI Director, a major step he took was to organize a meeting of all Assistant Public Prosecutors and senior officers to reform the Directorate of Prosecution.

The aim was to increase the present conviction rate to 75 percent by August 2022.

The CBI told the apex court that in the years 2020 and 2021, a thorough review of the system was done after consultations with senior officers in the investigating agency.

In this, new guidelines were issued regarding monitoring of cases related to the filing of cases in court to appeals filed in higher courts.

On the previous day i.e. on October 21, 2021, the CBI had told the Supreme Court that the decision to withdraw the general consent of various state governments for the investigation of the agency is proving to be harmful not only for the investigation but also for the prosecution of the cases.

CBI Director SK Jaiswal informed the Supreme Court in an affidavit that eight state governments – Bengal, Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Mizoram – have withdrawn the general consent.

He said that now it takes a lot of time to get specific consent on a case by case basis and at times it can be detrimental to time-bound and speedy investigation.

He said that out of 150 requests sent to these state governments, only 18 percent have been approved and most of the pending cases are related to bank frauds.
