Drivers Risking Lives on Jammu-Poonch Highway Amid Landslides and Broken Roads

Drivers Risking Lives on Jammu-Poonch Highway: Jammu-Poonch Highway turns risky as continuous rains trigger landslides, potholes, and road damage. Commuters demand urgent repair, drains, and safety measures from the administration.

Jammu, September 4 – The Bhawla-Kalidhar stretch of the Jammu-Poonch National Highway has turned into a death trap for commuters as continuous rains, landslides, and broken road conditions pose a grave danger to both drivers and passengers. The absence of roadside drains has worsened the crisis, forcing vehicles to navigate through slippery mud, deep potholes, and falling rocks.

Traffic movement on the highway has been badly hit due to frequent landslides, particularly near the Kharoti Sungal tunnel, where long jams lasting several hours have become a daily ordeal. Small vehicles are finding it increasingly difficult to cross the damaged patches, raising fears of complete road blockage if timely repairs are not undertaken.

Residents and drivers have expressed anger over the administration’s delay in addressing the situation. According to them, rainwater is directly flowing onto the road due to the lack of proper drainage, further deteriorating the condition of the highway.

Sarpanch Anil Sharma of Bhanwala village has urged the authorities to take immediate action. “Every day, drivers are risking their lives to cross this route. The administration must speed up road repair and drainage construction. Since this stretch falls under 57 RCC GREF, urgent intervention is needed for a quick solution,” Sharma said.

The residents have demanded that the district administration and GREF initiate drain construction, remove landslides, and repair the broken sections at the earliest to ensure safe and smooth travel for passengers.

If urgent measures are not taken, the Jammu-Poonch highway may face a complete shutdown, severely impacting connectivity in the region and leaving thousands of commuters stranded.
