Proposal against speaker in Kerala assembly, alleged role in gold smuggling case

The Congress-led opposition coalition – United Democratic Front (UDF) has come up with a resolution against Speaker P. Sriramakrishnan in Kerala Legislative Assembly for his alleged role in the gold smuggling case.

The motion is currently being discussed in the House, during which CPI (M) leader S Sharma said that the motion should not be taken up for discussion in the state assembly, as the allegations against the speaker are based on media speculation.

Explain that the case of gold smuggling in Kerala is related to the smuggling of gold in the state through diplomatic channels. The Customs Department uncovered it on July 5, 2020.

During this time, a case of bringing 30 kg of gold worth Rs 14.82 crore was found in consignments from diplomatic cargoes in Thiruvananthapuram.

The case is being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and the Customs Department.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday alleged that officials of the Customs Department tried to intimidate and threaten government officials during his appearance in the gold smuggling case.

In the state assembly, Vijayan said that Harikrishnan was summoned by the Customs Department under section 108 of the Customs Act. He appeared before her on 5 January 2021 at the department’s office in Ernakulam.

On coming back, on January 7, State Assistant Protocol Officer Harikrishnan informed the Chief Secretary about his experiences. He treated Harikrishna in a very insulting manner.
