Andhra Pradesh MLC Polls 2023: YSR Congress surprised everyone, announcing candidates 8 months before the MLC elections.

In an unprecedented move, Andhra Pradesh’s ruling party YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) announced candidates eight months ahead of elections for three seats in the Legislative Council.

The party late on Monday night announced candidates for three seats that will fall vacant in March next year.

Chief Minister and YSRCP President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy finalized the names of candidates for MLC seats from graduate constituencies.

He took this decision in a meeting with party MLAs, MLCs, and other leaders here on Monday.

Brahmin corporation chairman S. Sudhakar will contest from the Srikakulam-Vizianagaram-Visakhapatnam constituency.

Gudur’s Shyam Prasad Reddy will be the YSRCP candidate from the Prakasam-Nellore-Chittoor constituency, while V. Ravindra Reddy will contest from the Kurnool-Kadapa-Anantapur constituency.

Ravindra Reddy is the son of the sitting MLC of the same constituency.

Undergraduate voters in constituencies, each consisting of the three preceding districts, will cast their vote in elections to be held in February–March next year.

Political parties usually support independent candidates for MLC elections from graduate and teacher constituencies.

Jagan Mohan Reddy, however, discussed YSRCP’s proposal to field its candidates with party leaders. He not only gave his approval for the same but also announced the candidates.

For any election, parties announce their candidates at the last minute, but Jagan Reddy surprised everyone by finalizing the candidates eight months before the election.

Party leaders said they would give adequate time to the party candidates to a campaign by interacting with the graduate voters in their respective constituencies.

The meeting also decided to contest from Anantapur-Kadapa-Kurnool Teachers’ Constituency. However, the candidate for this will be decided later.
