Bangladeshi court sentenced four Islamic terrorists to death in the case of the murder of a Dhaka University professor.

A Bangladesh court on Wednesday sentenced four terrorists of a banned Islamist group to death. Two terrorists are still absconding in this case.

The court ordered the police to take steps to trace the fugitives and give them capital punishment. The convicted terrorists were members of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen (JMB).

Additional Sessions Judge Mohamed Al Mamun sentenced the terrorists to death for the 18 years ago murder of Dhaka University literature professor and author Humayun Azad.

Humayun Azad, a professor of Bengali literature, was stabbed to death on the Dhaka University campus on his way home from a book fair in February 2004.

Police said they were attacked by three youths and also detonated two bombs to escape.

Humayun Azad was initially treated at the Joint Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka, where his condition improved. He later went to Germany for further treatment but died a few days later.

Azad’s brother had initially filed a case with the police alleging that unidentified assailants tried to kill him, but after his death, the case turned into a murder case.
