CCU Will Increase The Life Of Thermal Power Plants

CCU will increase the life of thermal power plants, NTPC will play a leading role.

CCU i.e. Carbon Capturing and Utilization technology can be the guarantee of the long future of thermal power plants of the country.

The Government of India is also enthusiastic about this technology. Recently, an important meeting of NTPC was held under the chairmanship of Power Minister RK Singh.

NTPC is the country’s largest power company and has a coal-fired power generation capacity of close to 48,000 MW.

The target of bringing the country’s carbon emissions to zero by the year 2070 has raised questions about the future of all thermal power plants, including NTPC.

In such a situation, it has been decided to adopt CCU for these plants.

CCU technology is currently being used only in Canada. There is a capacity to generate 110 MW of electricity.

Officials of the Ministry of Power said that India will become the first country to use this technology on a large scale.

In a meeting held between the Power Minister and the officials of NTPC, it was decided that the company will start a pilot project with a capacity of 20 tonnes per day.

If this technology works properly, then the big problem of thermal plants can be solved. Even after 2070, the way to generate electricity from coal can be cleared.

It is noteworthy that in the last decade, India has closed 166 thermal plants with a capacity of 13,382 MW. India has started significantly increasing its renewable energy capacity.

But if technology like CCU works, India will be able to utilize its vast coal reserves as well.

It is broadly believed that the coal reserves of 111 times the coal that India is consuming in a year are still intact. That is, India can mine coal for the next 111 years in terms of current consumption.

But after the Net Zero target is revealed, beyond the year 2070, this is possible only when technology like CCU works.
