China to Supply 40 Stealth Jets to Pakistan: Should India Be Worried?

China to Supply 40 Stealth Jets to Pakistan: China is giving 40 J-35 stealth jets to Pakistan. Experts say India’s air defense could face a serious challenge. Will it tip the balance?

Pakistan is planning to buy China’s new 5th-generation stealth fighter jet J-35s. It is believed that it can get its first consignment by the end of this year. J-35 is China’s most advanced fighter jet, which is comparable to America’s F-35.

Pakistan already has 20 Chinese J-10C and JF-17 fighter planes. Now, if it buys 40 J-35s from China, it will become a part of the elite club of stealth fighter jets. India does not have any stealth fighter aircraft yet. Therefore, the balance of air power in South Asia may deteriorate.

How special is China’s J-35?

J-35 is a twin-engine, single-seater supersonic jet, which is used for multirole missions. It has advanced avionics, including an active electronically scanned array, an electro-optical targeting system, and infrared search-and-track.

The Chinese government mouthpiece Global Times has described it as working in a stealth and counter-stealth combat framework and maintaining air superiority. The J-35 is called a black box due to its excellent performance and is considered better than the US F-35.

China to Supply 40 Stealth Jets to Pakistan: Difficult to catch on radar

China unveiled the J-35 in November 2024. Two variants of it were revealed, one for the Navy and the other for ground-based operations. It is believed that Pakistan can get the second variant, which will have an infrared search-and-track facility.

The J-35 is such an effective fighter jet, understand it like this that it has a radar cross section of 0.001 square meters, which will make it difficult to catch. It is also a matter of concern for India that both China and Pakistan are countries equipped with stealth fighter jets, and India’s air defense can come under pressure.

India’s project under development

Former fighter pilot Group Captain Ajay Ahlawat said in a conversation with a leading news website that Pakistan having any variant of J-35 is going to increase India’s concern.

India’s 5th-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, i.e., the AMCA, is still under development, and there is no possibility of it flying before 2035. India may be considering buying F-35 or Su-57, but there is hardly anything better than AMCA.
