Construction of a dam by China on the Brahmaputra river raised India’s concern, a hydropower project to be built in Arunachal Pradesh.
India is planning to set up a 10-gigawatt hydroelectric project on the Brahmaputra river in Arunachal Pradesh. This response from India has come after reports of China building a dam on a part of the Brahmaputra River.
The Brahmaputra River is known as the Yarlung Tsangpo in China. It originates from Tibet and passes through Indian states – Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to Bangladesh.
Indian officials fear that China may build a dam on it to cause flooding or water crisis in the Indian region.
Due to military deadlock along the Line of Actual Control, the diplomatic relations between the two countries are not good at the moment.

TS Mehra, a senior official of the Union Ministry of Water, said that India would also have to build a big dam in Arunachal Pradesh to reduce the adverse effects caused by the construction of the dam by China.
Our proposal is under consideration before a higher level in government. He said that India will also build a large water storage capacity to counter the Chinese dam.
Some experts believe that the dam to be built by China on the Brahmaputra could become another cause of dispute between the two countries, as the Chinese dam would be close to the Indian border.

Fear of flood or water crisis in India due to Chinese dam
A senior official was quoted by the Chinese government media as saying that China was planning to set up a 60 GW hydropower project on a part of the Brahmaputra river.
Addressing an industrial conference, the chairman of the Chinese Power Construction Corporation, Yan Xiang, said that building a dam on the Brahmaputra is a historic occasion.
Mehra said that formally we have told the Chinese side that any of their projects should not adversely affect India. He has also assured us about this. However, we do not know how long they will live up to their assurance.
