Cyclonic Storm YAAS Update: PM Modi’s high-level meeting to deal with storm ‘Yaas’; Discussed with officers.

There is a danger of cyclonic storms Yaas in many states of the country. The Meteorological Department has expressed the possibility of turning it into a very severe cyclonic storm.

It may hit the shores of Odisha and West Bengal on 26 May. In view of this, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with officials of 14 departments including the NDMA and the NDRF.

During this time, he reviewed the preparedness to deal with the storm. The meeting was attended by the Chief Secretary and Officer of West Bengal, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh Andaman-Nicobar Islands, and Puducherry.

It was also attended by Railway Board Chairman, NDMA Secretary, IDF Chief along with Secretaries of Ministry of Home, Power, Shipping, Telecom, Petroleum and Natural Gas, Civil Aviation, and Fisheries.

DGs of the Coast Guard, NDRF, and IMD (Meteorological Department) also attended the meeting.

Giving information, the PMO said, PM Modi, directed senior officials to work in close coordination with the states to ensure the safe evacuation of people from high-risk areas and timely evacuation of people involved in coastal activities.

PM Modi talked about the need to ensure that the period of disruption in the power supply and communication network is restored to a minimum and speedy.

He asked the officials to ensure proper coordination and planning with the state government to ensure that there is no disruption in treatment and vaccination of Covid in hospitals.

The Prime Minister directed the officials to provide advice and instructions on what to do and what not to do during the cyclone, in the local language, easy to understand, and the citizens of the affected districts.

Cyclonic Storm YAAS Update: May turn into a cyclonic storm on 24 May.

The Meteorological Department’s DGM Mrityunjay Mohapatra said that the low-pressure area over the Bay of East-Central Bengal has become concentrated under a pressure today and it is located about 700 km from Balasore and Digha.

It is expected to move north and northwest and intensify into a cyclonic storm by the morning of 24 May.

It will reach the northern Bay of Bengal and adjoining northern Odisha and Bangladesh coasts near West Bengal on 26 May.

It will turn into a very cyclonic storm and cross the coast of northern Odisha and West Bengal with a wind speed of 185 kmph between Paradip and Sagar Island.

This is highly damaging wind speed. You can compare the losses with previous cyclones Tauktae and cyclone Amphan.

Danger on the coasts of Odisha, Bengal, and Bangladesh

According to the Meteorological Department, wind speed is expected to reach 90-100 kmph to 110 kmph from the morning of 26 May on the coasts of West Bengal, North Odisha, and Bangladesh.

By evening it can grow more rapidly.

The Meteorological Department said that it would continue towards the north-northwest and would take a serious turn and reach the northern Bay of Bengal near West Bengal and adjoining northern Odisha and Bangladesh coasts by the morning of 26 May.

IMD said, “Around the evening of 26 May it is very likely to cross the coasts of West Bengal and adjoining North Odisha and Bangladesh.”

Cyclonic Storm YAAS Update: A low-pressure area poses more danger

A low-pressure area formed over the Bay of East-Central Bengal and adjoining North Andaman Sea on Saturday.

A low-pressure region is the first stage of a cyclone formation, not necessarily that all low-pressure areas turn into a cyclonic storm.

According to the Meteorological Department, a low-pressure area is expected to be centered in the east-central region of the Bay of Bengal today.

It is likely to move north-northwestwards, which could turn into a cyclonic storm by 24 May and take the form of a very severe cyclonic storm in the next 24 hours.
