First phase voting in Andhra Pradesh Panchayat elections, elections will continue till 21 February.

The first phase of panchayat elections has started in Andhra Pradesh today. Polling is being held for 2,723 panchayats in the first phase.

The Panchayati Raj Department’s release issued on Monday said that 20,157 ward members will be elected in the election.

Polling will start from 6.30 am to 3.30 pm, while counting of votes will start at 4 pm. Voting will take place in four phases till 21 February.

The release further said that elections are being held for a total of 3,249 panchayat sarpanches, out of which 525 sarpanches have been elected unopposed. Of this, no nomination has been filed for a village in the Nellore district.

Explain that 7,506 candidates are contesting for the post of sarpanch, while 43,601 candidates are in the fray for ward members. The election is being held through ballot paper and no political party symbols are being used in it.

The release said that 29,732 polling stations have been set up, of which 3458 have been identified as sensitive and 3594 as highly sensitive.

According to the release, all necessary precautionary measures have been taken as per Kovid-19 and tight security arrangements and PPE kits will be made available to the infected voters.
