First Tesla Delivery in India
After opening its first showroom in India on 15 July at the Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai, Tesla has officially started deliveries of its electric vehicles (EVs). Pratap Sarnaik, the Transport Minister of Maharashtra, is the first customer. He was given the keys to his white Tesla Model Y at the Tesla Experience Center.
Sarnaik expressed his excitement, saying, “I am thrilled to get the first Tesla in India. It is a matter of pride for me. I purchased this car at full price, without any discount. I will use it to drop my grandson off at school, so that more people see it, learn about EVs, and are encouraged to adopt them.”
Prices and Variants of the Tesla Model Y in India
In the Indian market, the Tesla Model Y comes in two varieties:
₹67.89 lakh for the Model Y Long Range RWD (ex-showroom)
Range: 500 km
0-100 km/h in 5.9 seconds
Model Y Long Range RWD – ₹67.89 lakh (Ex-showroom)
Range: 622 km
0-100 km/h in 5.6 seconds
Both variants come with a top speed of 201 kmph and support Tesla Supercharging, offering up to 267 km range in just 15 minutes of charging. The Full Self-Driving (FSD) package is available at an additional cost of ₹6 lakh.
First Tesla Model Y Delivered in Mumbai: Bookings and Market Response
According to Bloomberg, Tesla has received 600 bookings in India so far, which is lower than expected. The company plans to deliver 350–500 units this year, with the first shipment arriving from Shanghai in September.
Delivery and registration are now limited to Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai. Despite the small EV market in India, sales have grown by 93% between April and July, showing strong future potential for electric vehicles.
