First Written Agreement Between The Afghan Govt & Taliban

First written agreement between the Afghan government and the Taliban, The US welcomes the move.

A preliminary agreement was reached on Wednesday between the government of Afghanistan and the Taliban to move forward on peace talks.

This is the first written agreement between the two in a 19-year war. The United States welcomed the deal, citing an opportunity to stop the violence.

The agreement outlines the way forward on negotiations but is considered a major breakthrough because it will allow negotiators to move forward on more fundamental issues including negotiating a truce.

“The process, including the preamble to the talks, has been finalized and the talks will start on the agenda from now on,” said Nader Naderi, a member of the negotiating team of the Afghan government.

A Taliban spokesman also confirmed the deal on Twitter. According to the joint statement issued by the two sides, “the task of drafting the titles for the agenda (for talks) was entrusted to the Joint Working Committee”.

The agreement is possible after months of negotiations in Doha, Qatar’s capital. The US continued to encourage these negotiations, even as the violence continued.

The Afghan government and international fraternity have been demanding an immediate cease-fire, but the Taliban continued to deny it in early-stage negotiations.

“This (agreement) is a step towards starting negotiations on the main issues, including the Afghan people’s major demand for a comprehensive ceasefire,”

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani spokesman Sedik Sediki quoted the president as saying on Twitter.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo congratulated the two sides for their determination and willingness to find a common ground and said that the United States would work hard with all sides to reduce violence.
