India committed to advance gender equality, women empowerment-Smriti Irani at United Nations.

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani on Friday reiterated India’s commitment to pursue the goals of gender equality and empowerment of all women to ensure that men and women are given equal importance and equal opportunities everywhere.

India committed to advance gender equality: Speaking in a general discussion of the 65th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women.

Irani said, ‘India on its commitment to building a more equitable and equal world for COVID for its daughters and women around the world continues.’

Irani also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the steps taken for the development of women.

The minister said that women’s agency and leadership are playing an important role in all efforts as the country realizes the aspiration for a ‘self-reliant India’.

She said that we are implementing a series of flagship programs in India, which will focus on significant expansion in women’s financial inclusion, employment and self-employment opportunities, healthcare, nutrition, security, defense, and education.

Irani said that the reservation of seats for women in local governance has ensured that 1.37 million elected Indian women representatives provide leadership in formulating and implementing gender-sensitive public policies at the community level.

She said that it is a matter of great pleasure for us that through the Financial Inclusion Plan of Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, for the first time in the history of our country more than 220 million Indian women were brought into the banking system.

The Union Minister also said that the government has given priority to gender targets within the Indian skills program and as part of the initiative to promote women entrepreneurship.

She also mentioned that the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme has improved the sex ratio at birth. It has seen an improvement of 16 points, from 918 to 934 at the all-India level.

It was reported that the death rate of 130 per 100,000 was seen in 2014-16, while it remained at 113 in 2016-18.

She further stated that while the Government of India has dedicated its efforts to provide clean cooking fuel to more than 80 million Indian women in the last 6 years.

There is the construction of 100 million household toilets which have contributed a lot to the health and well-being of women in India.
