Odisha STF Took Major Action Against Drug Smugglers

Odisha STF took major action against drug smugglers and seized assets worth more than three crores.

A competent authority under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has ordered the confiscation of properties worth over Rs 3 crore owned by two ganja smugglers from Odisha’s Ganjam district.

The order has been passed as recommended by the STF of Odisha Police to confiscate the properties of two brothers Banamali Pradhan and Arun Kumar Pradhan of the Buguda area in Ganjam, police said.

106 kg ganja and 517 g opium were seized.

The STF had seized 106 kg of ganja and 517 grams of opium from the possession of the two brothers on April 29, 2022.

Police said that later, during the financial probe, the police found that Arun and Banmali had allegedly acquired assets worth over Rs 3 crore from the illegal drug trade.

According to the official notification, “Illegal assets of more than Rs 3 crore acquired by the accused persons from illegal trade in banned ganja and opium have been identified and seized through financial investigation.”

As per the provision of Section 68(f) of the NDPS Act, 1985, a detailed proposal was sent to the Competent Authority of the NDPS Act, Kolkata, and the Office of the Administrator for confirmation of confiscation/confiscation of properties acquired from illegal drugs business.

Property acquired within six years.

The seized assets of the duo include five commercial buildings in Buguda, eight land properties, deposits in 19 accounts of different banks, two vehicles, and 595 grams of gold ornaments.

Officials said these properties were purchased in the name of the accused persons as well as their relatives with illicit money from drug trafficking within the last six years.

Order to confiscate property passed on July 26.

On July 26, 2022, Competent Authority under NDPS Act, Kolkata passed an order to confirm the freezing/confiscation order confiscating huge amount of assets worth Rs 3 crore in STF case under sections of NDPS Act 1985.

The Competent Authority is a quasi-judicial authority under the NDPS Act to pass orders for confiscation of illegally acquired property.

Gold jewelry recovered.

The seized assets include five commercial buildings in Buguda, eight land properties, bank balances in 19 accounts of different banks, two vehicles, and 595 grams of gold ornaments.

The property was purchased in the name of the accused persons as well as their kin and relatives with illicit money from drug trafficking within the last six years
