Phone tapping case: Shock to former Mumbai police chief Sanjay Pandey, the court sent him to ED custody for 9 days.

A Delhi court on Wednesday sent former Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) custody for nine days in a money laundering case.

The case is related to alleged phone tapping and espionage of stock exchange employees. Special Judge Sunaina Sharma allowed the ED to question Pandey.

The agency had earlier told the court that it has to interrogate Pandey by confronting the other accused in the case.

Pandey denies tapping the phone.

Additional Solicitor General SV Raju, appearing for the ED, moved the court seeking 14-day custody of Pandey to the probe agency.

He said that the Mumbai Police Commissioner had committed an illegal act by tapping the phone of Mahanagar Telecommunications Corporation Limited (MTNL) for which Rs 454 crore was paid and he became the bearer of the crime.

Pandey told the court that he had never tapped the phone or kept a live watch on him. He was arrested by the ED in this case on Tuesday.

Phone tapping case: Chitra Ramakrishnan is also arrested.

The ED had earlier arrested National Stock Exchange (NSE) managing director Chitra Ramakrishnan on July 14 after questioning with the permission of the court.

She was produced in the court from jail under the order passed earlier by the judge. On the plea of ED, the judge issued the production warrant to the accused.

Later, the ED arrested Ramakrishnan on the grounds of non-cooperation and again produced him before the court and sought nine days’ custody for questioning.

The court, however, directed Ramakrishnan to be sent to the agency’s custody for four days.

Ramakrishnan was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a separate case and is currently in judicial custody.
