Police Protection Cannot Be Given To Sister Lucy: Kerala HC

Police protection cannot be given to Sister Lucy in the convent eviction case: Kerala High Court.

The Kerala High Court on Wednesday said that no police protection was provided to Sister Lucy Kalappura in connection with the Franciscan Clarist Congregation’s eviction from the convent.

Sister Lucy has been expelled from the FCC and is currently living in the convent.

The court said that the police can protect their life and property at any other place of residence instead of the convent.

Justice Raja Vijayaraghavan said the High Court order providing police protection last year cannot continue if she intends to stay in the convent.

He added that if she continues to stay in the convent that has been accused of indiscipline, she will continue to have conflicts with the staff or officials there.

The nun, appearing for her personally, told the court that she has challenged her expulsion order in a civil court and wants to stay in the convent until it is decided.

Sister Lucy said the court could withdraw the police protection given to her, but she should be allowed to stay in the convent as she had no other place to go.

In June, the Vatican rejected Sister Lucy’s third appeal against the FCC’s decision.

She was expelled in August 2019 after the FCC sought an explanation from her about her lifestyle that allegedly violated church rules, failing which she failed to provide.

She took part in the movement against Bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a nun.
