Russia and Iran worried over Syria and Libyan fighters in Nagorno-Karabakh. Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Muhammad Jawad Zarif held a phone conversation on Friday.

The two leaders have expressed concern over the involvement of Syrian and Libyan fighters in the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute as both Russia and Iran are worried about the situation. Two Syrian rebel sources say Turkey is sending rebel boys to Syria to support Azerbaijan.

This claim has been denied by both Ankara and Baku. French President Emmanuel Macron has accused Turkey of sending Syrian jihadists into the region.

There is a long-standing dispute between the two countries of the former Soviet Union over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Azerbaijan considers the region as its own and internationally it is considered part of this country.

However, after the 1994 war, the region is not under the control of Azerbaijan. There is a huge presence of soldiers from both sides in this area. Spread over 4,400 kilometers, most of Nagorno-Karabakh is mountainous. There was a clash between the two sides in July last, in which 16 people died.
