Taliban Action Will Determine Global Community’s Reaction

Taliban action will determine the global community’s reaction: Blinken.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the Taliban’s relationship with the international community would be defined by the actions the group takes.

He says it is not a favor to the world but a basic requirement for a stable and secure Afghanistan.

The Taliban captured almost all major cities in Afghanistan last month after the withdrawal of US forces that began on May 1. On 15 August the capital Kabul was besieged by the rebels.

Radical Islamic rebels claimed victory at Panjshir (which was achieved with much difficulty in the end) on 6 September.

Three weeks after the Taliban thus captured Kabul, they completed their occupation of Afghanistan.

“Again, the Taliban want legitimacy, they want support from the international community,” Blinken told a press conference here on Thursday.

The relationship the Taliban will have with the international community will be defined by the group’s actions.

The resolution sought that Afghan territory Should not be used to threaten or attack any country or to harbor terrorists or to train or to plan or finance terrorist acts.

And reiterated the importance of combating terrorism in Afghanistan, including individuals and entities designated pursuant to Resolution 1267 (1999), and noted the Taliban’s relevant commitments.

Taliban action will determine the global community’s reaction: Blinken told reporters that Afghanistan was the focus of discussion in the Security Council.

Also in  G20 as well as several bilateral and multilateral meetings during the high-level 76th session of the UN General Assembly currently underway.

In those meetings, we underscored how important it is that the international community remains united in its approach.
