The investigation began on October 27, when posters of Jaish-e-Mohammed appeared mysteriously across Srinagar. The incident immediately caught the attention of security forces, as the posters carried pro-terror slogans and messages supporting the banned organization.
During the probe, CCTV footage obtained by the Jammu and Kashmir Police revealed a man placing the posters in several areas of Srinagar. Upon closer examination, the suspect was identified as Dr. Adil Ahmed Rather, a senior resident doctor who had recently been working at Government Medical College (GMC), Anantnag.
Arrests and Raids Across States
Following the identification, police launched a swift manhunt. On November 6, Dr. Adil Ahmed Rather was arrested from a hospital on Ambala Road in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He was accused of working for JeM and actively spreading the group’s ideology through posters and other means.
During interrogation, the accused provided leads that prompted further investigations. Acting on this information, Jammu and Kashmir Police conducted a search operation at GMC Anantnag, where they recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition from Dr. Rather’s locker.
Soon after, the probe extended to Faridabad, Haryana, where police raided the rented residence of Dr. Muffazil Shakeel, a close associate of Dr. Rather. The raid led to a sensational recovery of 350 kilograms of RDX, along with two AK-47 rifles, magazines, and a huge stock of bullets.
Terror Network Under the Scanner
Investigators believe both doctors were part of a larger terror module linked to Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Mohammed. Preliminary findings indicate that the explosives and weapons were meant to be transported to multiple locations for possible terror strikes in Delhi and northern India.
Police sources have confirmed that multiple security agencies, including NIA and intelligence units, have joined the investigation to trace the network’s funding and operational routes. The use of professionals such as doctors in terror-related activities has also raised serious concerns about radicalization through covert online networks.
