UNGA: UN Lax On Critical Issues, Need For Change

UNGA: UN lax on critical issues, need for comprehensive change in a global organization. On the day of the founding of the United Nations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the need for a comprehensive change in this global organization.

Earlier, UNGA PM Modi has also raised the issue of reform in the Social Economic Council. In the year 2013, the then PM Manmohan Singh also advocated change in the Security Council. Indeed, the need for change has been felt for a long time.

Why United Nations

United Nations was established on October 24, 1945. Its objective was to facilitate international law, international security, economic development, social progress, human rights and world peace.

It was founded after the Second World War so that the world war never comes forward again. Its member countries number 193.

Need for change

The United Nations, established on the issue of peace and stability in the world, is unable to meet the major challenges related to them. Its role in fighting terrorism is not remarkable. Major issues like climate change and energy are also being tried outside the United Nations.

The role of the World Health Organization (WHO) in this period of corona infection has also come under suspicion. Many countries including the US have accused the WHO of bias.

Security Council Important Issue

In June this year, India has been elected as a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 8th time. There are a total of 15 countries in the UNSC. Of these, the US, Russia, France, Britain and China are permanent members.

India, a major contributor to the UN peacekeeping campaign, is a strong contender for permanent membership of the UNSC. The United States, Russia, France and Britain support India’s permanent membership of the Council. However, China uses the veto.

The veto means that the issue will not be carried forward. Other countries including India are raising their voice for reform in many such provisions.

India is a major partner in peace operations: Out of the 71 peace operations of the United Nations, about 50 are operated with the help of India. More than two lakh soldiers of India are contributing to the peace mission.

So far, more than 160 Indian soldiers, policemen and common people have lost their lives during peacekeeping efforts in the member countries.
