Visakhapatnam gas leak incident: 280 people recovered and discharged, others are undergoing treatment.

A high-level meeting was held on Monday at Atchutapuram Special Economic Zone in Anakapalle district on the gas leak issue.

Industries Minister Amarnath, Chairman of Pollution Control Board AK Parida, Chemical Engineers, and District Collector Police officers participated in the meeting.

The Industries Minister told the news agency that out of 369 admitted to the hospital, 280 people have been cured and discharged, and the treatment of the rest is going on.

“The government has constituted a joint committee with government officials and experts. According to committee sources, 800 people were working in the unit where the gas leak accident took place.

Because of this people got sick. The minister further said, ‘We suspect that this leakage was caused by the air conditioner.

We have sent samples of chemicals and chlorine to the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad.

The report will come by today or tomorrow morning. Once the report of the committee comes, then we will take action against the culprits.

The impact of the gas leak from Porus Laboratories in Achutapuram was felt in the apparel unit located inside the SEZ.

Due to this, the women working here immediately fell unconscious after complaining of burning in the eyes, nausea, and vomiting.

Apparel-manufacturing units in SEZs were immediately shut down as a precaution and personnel working in other units were evacuated. After this incident, the entire area was sanitized.

It is noteworthy that in the report given by the police on the matter, it was said that this leakage happened at around 2.15 pm.

The situation was brought under control by firefighters sprinkling water to reduce the effect of thick smoke.

Soon after the incident, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy ordered an inquiry. He also directed the officials to provide better treatment to the affected.
