LTTE Chief Prabhakaran: The Black History Of LTTE Chief Prabhakaran Created Nuisance In Sri Lanka For Three Decades
LTTE Chief Prabhakaran: The black history of LTTE Chief Prabhakaran created a nuisance in Sri Lanka for three decades; He was killed 14 years ago on 18 May.
LTTE Chief Prabhakaran: Prabhakaran, the head of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, was killed 14 years ago on this day.
He was not only a canker sore on the nose of the Sri Lankan government for a long time, but he also gave an unforgettable wound to India.
Prabhakaran was the same person, because of which we had to lose thousands of Indian soldiers.
Also, he is also considered guilty of the assassination of the former Prime Minister of the country, Rajiv Gandhi.
However, almost three decades later, after the Sri Lankan government completely eliminated the LTTE, Prabhakaran was also eliminated.
Panic remained among the people for three decades.
Velupillai Prabhakaran was a Sri Lankan Tamil guerrilla and founder of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). This institution was formed in the year 1976.
The LTTE sought to create an independent Tamil state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. The LTTE had maintained terror in the minds of the people there for nearly three decades.
Subsequently, the Sri Lankan government and army killed all LTTE rebels and Chief Prabhakaran in 2009.
Why did the fighting between Tamils and Sinhalese start?
Since independence in Sri Lanka, there was a conflict between the Sinhalese and the Tamil community.
It is believed that Sinhalese was given more importance by ignoring Tamils there. Sinhalese was given the status of official language.
This led to the neglect of Tamils in jobs and other things. This created a feeling of insecurity and rebellion in them.
Several Tamil organizations opposed it, the most dangerous of which was the LTTE itself.
Prabhakaran used to demand an independent state.
Velupillai Prabhakaran always sought to create an independent Tamil state. With time the conditions became more serious.
In Sri Lanka, many times there were rebellions among Sinhalese and Tamils, and civil war-like conditions were created in the country.
On July 23, 1983, LTTE guerrilla fighters killed 13 Sri Lankan soldiers. After which violence broke out across the country. About 3 thousand Tamils were killed in this violence.
Things started getting worse in 1986.
By 1986, the situation between the Sri Lankan government and LTTE miscreants was getting worse. At the same time, the Sri Lankan government also made every effort to control the LTTE people.
In January 1987, President JR Jayawardene imposed military rule in Jaffna, a stronghold of the LTTE and Tamils, and 10,000 soldiers were deployed there.
India had to send an army under compulsion.
From 1987 onwards, the Sri Lankan government intensified its efforts to suppress the LTTE. They launched airstrikes. In 1987 the Sri Lankan army besieged the city of Jaffna.
Then the Government of India appealed to Sri Lanka to stop violence against Tamils as well as warned it, but it had no effect on Jayawardene of Sinhalese origin.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka had started creating problems for India. Sri Lanka’s closeness with China and Pakistan started increasing in 1987.
This could have harmed India. Due to the proximity of China-Pakistan, India had sent its army there under compulsion.
Prabhakaran obeyed Rajiv Gandhi.
In July 1987, talks started for peace between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE. The Government of India was in the role of a mediator. But Prabhakaran did not want to compromise.
He was sticking to the demand of creating a separate state. He was called to Delhi. He met Rajiv Gandhi.
He obeyed Rajiv Gandhi and at the same time kept a condition that after peace is established in the country, he should be given an important role in the Sri Lankan government.
After this, on 29 July 1987, the three parties signed a peace agreement in Colombo. The agreement took effect, and fighting between the government and the LTTE in Sri Lanka stopped.
Went for peace, but got caught in a war.
India was given the task of maintaining peace after the withdrawal of the Sri Lankan army and until elections were held in Jaffna.
For this, Indian Peacekeeping Force i.e. IPKF was formed and sent there. About 80 thousand soldiers of the Indian Army were sent to Sri Lanka.
It was believed that the LTTE supporters would not fight the Indians, so the Indian force would only observe. But, during this time Prabhakaran refused to accept the peace agreement.
They started attacking the Indian Army itself. But the Indian Army prepared a strategy to control them.
LTTE attacked Indian Army.
The army made a strategy to capture the LTTE headquarters. For this, 10 Para Commandos were sent to take control of the LTTE’s headquarters at Jaffna University.
In the dark of night, 50 soldiers were sent there by helicopters. To keep the operation a secret, all the lights of the helicopter were turned off.
Four helicopters were supposed to land at the LTTE headquarters, two each, but when the first two helicopters started landing, there was heavy fire on them.
After this came the second team of helicopters, which had 53 commandos. The LTTE fired heavily on it as well, due to which the Indian Army had to retreat from there.
The firing left huge holes in the helicopters. The chopper had 17 holes. 29 soldiers of Sikh LI were martyred. While 31 jawans managed to land there.
