Order To Hold Civic Elections In 9 New Districts Of Tamil Nadu

Order to hold civic elections in nine new districts of Tamil Nadu by September 15.

The Supreme Court has ordered the Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) to conduct local body elections by September 15 in nine new districts created out of four existing districts.

The bench said that the State Election Commission will have to issue a notification to hold elections to local bodies and declare the results by September 15.

Referring to the apex court’s December 11, 2019 order, the bench said that TNSEC has taken 18 months instead of the given time of four months.

If the order of the court is not complied with, the Election Commission will be liable for contempt action. Senior advocate PS Narasimha, appearing for the Election Commission of India (ECI).

He said that a large number of cases of Covid-19 infection are still coming up in the state. Some time should be given for holding elections in these nine districts.

To this, the bench said that covid-19 has become an excuse in every other case nowadays.

“It is better that you conduct elections by September 15, otherwise we will initiate contempt proceedings for non-compliance,” the bench said.

Kerala High Court stays the order of Lakshadweep administration,

The Kerala High Court on Tuesday stayed the Lakshadweep administration’s order to shut down dairy farms and change the diet of children by eliminating meat, including chicken, from the mid-day meal.

The stay order was given by the Division Bench of Chief Justice S Manikumar and Justice Shaji P while hearing a PIL.

The court said that these orders should not be implemented till the counter affidavit is filed by the administration.

Petitioner Ajmal Ahmed has alleged that this has been done with malicious intent to change the eating habits of the residents of the island.

According to the petitioner, this order is a prelude to the implementation of Animal Protection, 2021, which deals with banning the slaughter of cattle and consumption of beef and beef products.
