Separatist Leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani Died On Wednesday

Separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani dies, internet services suspended in Kashmir, a day of mourning in Pakistan.

Former Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani passed away on Wednesday. His age was 91 years.

The administration has stopped internet services as a precautionary measure, tightening the security arrangements in the valley. Inspector General of Kashmir, Vijay Kumar gave this information.

Geelani, a resident of Bommai in Sopore, had been living in Hyderpora on the outskirts of Srinagar for many years. He was suffering from many diseases including heart, kidney, diabetes.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed grief over Geelani’s death. “Pakistan will observe a day of mourning and the flag will be flown at half-mast,” the Prime Minister tweeted.

Geelani, who is counted among the strong pillars of Jamaat-e-Islami Kashmir, has also been a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.

At the last moment, he had both sons Dr. Naeem Gilani and Naseem Gilani besides his wife Jawahira Begum. His eldest son-in-law Altaf Shah is lodged in Tihar Jail for terror funding.

Geelani, who played a key role in the formation of the Muslim United Front of Kashmir and Hurriyat Conference, also wrote a book on Allama Iqbal.

Wrote four books on topics related to separatism and Islam.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti expressed grief over Geelani’s death by tweeting. In the tweet, he wrote, ‘Saddened by the demise of Gilani sahib.

We did not agree on most things but I respected them. May Allah give them a place in paradise. I extend my condolences to his family and well-wishers.

Born on 29 September 1929 in Sopore, Geelani presided over the Hurriyat for many years. Geelani had resigned from the All Party Hurriyat Conference (APHC) in June this year.

Recently, a reminder notice was sent to him for payment of a fine of Rs 14.4 lakh.

This fine was imposed on him by the Enforcement Directorate, ED under FEMA. Let us inform you that Geelani was elected from Sopore in 1972, 1977, and 1987.
