The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested 10 Sri Lankan nationals and three Indians in connection with its probe into the illegal drugs and arms trade case related to efforts to revive the activities of the Sri Lankan Tamil separatist group Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in India and Sri Lanka.

A charge sheet has been filed against 13 people. The drugs were being procured from one Haji Salim, who is suspected to be living in Pakistan.

The accused persons were using various foreign WhatsApp numbers for carrying out clandestine business. The handlers sitting in Pakistan were trying to revive LTTE.

The investigation into the case unearthed his conspiracy to fund the revival of the LTTE through the narcotics trade. He was arrested from Trichy Special Camp.

The investigation further revealed that the accused were using the proceeds of crime to lead a life of luxury. Several mobile phones with pre-activated Indian SIM cards have been seized from them.

The NIA also seized various digital devices, documents related to drug transactions, Rs 80 lakh in cash, and nine gold bars during the investigation.

The cash and gold were proceeds from the sale of narcotics and were being routed through the hawala network between Chennai and Sri Lanka.

Several transactions using crypto platforms were also detected between the accused. The NIA filed a case on 8 July 2022 and arrested 13 people.

Three Indians are among the accused charged yesterday under various sections of IPC, UA(P) Act 1967, and NDPS Act. Among them are Selvakumar M, Vigneswara Perumal, Vicky and Ayyapan Nandu.
