Center Refuses To Give A Detailed Affidavit In Pegasus Case

Center refuses to give a detailed affidavit in the Pegasus case, agrees to get a probe by a panel of experts.

During a hearing in the Supreme Court on the Israeli spyware Pegasus case, the central government said it does not want to file a detailed affidavit on petitions seeking an independent probe into the alleged Pegasus spying case.

The Center told a bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana that it has nothing to hide and hence the government itself has decided to constitute a committee of experts to probe the allegations.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice NV Ramana that whether any particular software is used by the government or not.

This is not a matter of public discussion and is not in the national interest to make this information a part of the affidavit. This bench also included Justices Suryakant and Hema Kohli.

To this, the top court told Mehta that it has already clarified that it does not want the government to disclose anything that compromises national security.

Center refuses to give a detailed affidavit: Mehta said the report of the committee of experts would be placed before the apex court.

Earlier, the central government had filed a limited affidavit in the apex court saying the petitions seeking an independent probe into the Pegasus espionage allegations were based on conjectures or baseless media reports or incomplete or unconfirmed material.
