Devastation due to heavy rains in Chennai, 3 killed, red alert in many districts of Tamil Nadu.

Three people have died due to electrocution following heavy rains at several places in Chennai city. Roads and low-lying areas were flooded due to rain.

Heavy rains witnessed heavy traffic jams in many areas of the city from 6 pm to 8:30 pm, especially on Mount Road, Poonamallee Road.

At the same time, three people have also died due to electrocution after heavy rains at many places in Chennai city. While a part of the roof of VR Mall in the Anna Nagato area also collapsed.

Amid heavy rains, 1000 cusecs of water have also been released from Chembrambakkam Dam following which a red alert has been issued in Chennai.

Apart from this, due to heavy rains, many areas of the capital Chennai were flooded.

According to the state government, a red alert has been issued in Chennai and adjoining districts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, and Chinglepet.

On the other hand, due to heavy rains, Chennai Metro announced to extend the service time by one hour to 12 noon to enable passengers to reach their homes safely.

27 cases of tree falling were reported in Chennai.

Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Commissioner, Greater Chennai Corporation, said that 27 cases of tree falling have been reported in Chennai.

More than 145 pumps are running to clear the waterlogging caused by heavy rains in the city.

Earlier in the afternoon, it started raining in most areas of the city and suburbs with heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places.

According to the Meteorological Department, the highest rainfall of 17.65 cm was recorded in MRC Nagar. Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 14.65 cm and 10 cm respectively.

The IMD had predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts. The rain was expected to last for two hours.

Earlier today, the IMD had predicted heavy rainfall at isolated places over Coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on December 31 and January 1.
