Pakistan Stops Siege Of Gwadar Port Due Threat Of Insecurity

Pakistan stops the siege of Gwadar Port, the threat of insecurity hinged on Chinese investment.

The Government of Balochistan currently stops work on the plan to encircle the Gwadar Port in Pakistan. Local people were opposing this plan.

The Pakistan Army, Makran Administration, Gwadar Port Authority, and the Government of Balochistan had planned to build a 24-square-kilometer wall on three sides of the port.

The wall was to be built to improve the security of the ongoing project under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

The task of operating the Gwadar port has been assigned to China. Under the CPEC, this port connected to China is sending goods to countries in Central Asia and Europe.

The CPEC has been under threat from the beginning due to the movement of Baloch separatists.

Balochistan Home Minister Jia Longo held a press conference on Saturday to declare the construction of the wall around Gwadar port to be stopped.

He said this was done after criticism from the local people. Local people will not be deprived of decisions about Gwadar and fencing will be decided after the locals take the issue in confidence.

According to the Asia Times, Mohammad Aslam Bhootani, a member of the National Assembly from Gwadar-Lasbella.

He expressed displeasure over the decision and said that putting fencing in Gwadar in the name of security would raise doubts in the minds of the local population.

According to the South China Morning Post newspaper, this decision of Pakistan has shocked China. He feels that Pakistan is taking prejudice in securing its investment project.

This could jeopardize his large investment in CPEC. There may be an increased risk for Chinese officers and employees working in them.

It is noteworthy that Balochistan is the most turbulent region of Pakistan. Extremists are often attacked there and the population there is also opposed to CPEC.
